How do I chose a therapist?

As you might expect, it is best to pick someone with the right professional credentials and specialisms or to find a practitioner through personal referral. But the relationship between the therapist and the client is a personal thing. You would not tell someone you didn’t like or feel comfortable with, your intimate secrets. Therefore the person you chose must be someone with whom you feel some personal rapport - only you will know who that is!

The therapist is likely to be someone who has qualities similar to your best friend or your favourite aunt or uncle, combined with the rigour and detachment of a qualified professional.

You can check their qualifications through the recognised professional associations

It is therefore important to speak personally to the person you chose to treat you, to see if that critical rapport is there. The initial appointment provides an opportunity for you to verify this, prior to committing to a series of treatments.
